Sales and use tax collections for the month of August increased 3.1% comparedto the prior year period. The large increases of prior months of the variousretailing sectors tempered in August, but most sectors were able to showgains. The largest increase was building material suppliers, with 26.3%.Hotels followed at 19.9% and furniture, appliance, and electronics were thirdwith a 19.3% gain.
Grocers showed a decrease of 1.7%, which was due to the opening by a nationalretailer of competitive retailing outlets included in other industry sectors.Clothing specialty stores declined 1.6%.
Use tax collections decreased due to less equipment purchases by manufacturersand retailers.
