Charitable giving is now easier — online

The Pikes Peak United Way launched a new, more interactive Web site recently, allowing donors easier access to giving to area nonprofits.

Designed to lure new donors, the redesigned, secured site allows visitors to use credit-card numbers to donate to the annual campaign. The new system is designed to go beyond fundraising and provide links connecting visitors to a wide variety of information, including a “fun zone” for kids, area tourist attractions and a quick rundown on the 40 nonprofit organizations the agency funds.

Only a handful of United Way agencies across the country are using this new system. While some feel online giving depersonalizes the effort, others feel it is a time saver; the synopsis of agency needs are at the fingertips and giving by credit-card voucher eliminates a lot of paperwork. Because online giving is relatively new, there is little information available on its effectiveness.
