Susan Spencer was named news editor of the Colorado Springs Business Journal. The 10-year newspaper veteran plans expanded coverage of issues that impact local business.
“We want business people to use the Business Journal not only for the nuts-and-bolts calendars and records, but to see how events impact their businesses and what they can do to succeed,” Spencer said.
Spencer plans added coverage of how developments in education, workforce development, healthcare, politics and other areas affect the local business community, as well as improving ongoing coverage of real estate, technology, finance, construction and other specialties with more facts and business insights.
More of the human element in all facets of business will be explored to reflect what is going on in the community, she said.
“We want conversations with the business community so it has a forum for discussion of the ideas and concerns that are influencing business,” she said.
The University of Utah graduate moved to Colorado Springs earlier this year from the Phoenix area, where she worked as an editor and investigative reporter covering local news and crime.
Spencer has been involved in reorganizing the publication under Publisher Bob Lombardi.
“I’m excited about what’s happening at the Business Journal and the positive changes it’s making to better serve the business community,” she said.
The Business Journal is part of Minneapolis-based Dolan Media Group, a national group of 23 daily and weekly business and law publications. The company also is involved in business and legal data collection and distribution.
Dolan purchased the Colorado Springs Business Journal along with The Pueblo Business Journal and The Madison Business Journal in Wisconsin for an undisclosed price from founders Charles Shelden and Roger Powell in 1998.
