Woodmen Road under Interstate
25 was closed to all vehicle and
pedestrian traffic from Saturday, Jan. 12 to Sunday, Jan. 13 to remove the old southbound I-25 bridge. Detour signs and state troopers were present while the demolition was in progress. The old southbound bridge was dismantled in phases, beginning with removing beams and guardrails, and then cutting and moving away the deck into sections for further breaking. The final stage of the demolition was removing the piers that provided support for the old bridge. In addition to replacing the existing interstate bridge structures to improve safety and meet federal requirements, this project will provide longer on- and off-ramps, additional through lanes and dedicated turn lanes at the interchange. It will also realign Vincent Drive to Campus Drive to eliminate a traffic signal on Woodmen Road that is currently very close to the interchange. The Woodmen Road safety improvement project is part of the I-25 Corridor Improvements Project through the Pikes Peak Region. This project began in Dec. 2000 and is anticipated to be complete in late 2003.
