The final chapter of the McKinzey-White Bookshop story has an unpleasant ending. The locally-owned store will close at the end of June, reducing the number of small privately-owned bookstores in Colorado Springs to just a handful.
Owner Karen Bauder said “the market is saturated” with book sellers, citing Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com, and Borders as “big boys… with deep pockets.” The store opened in 1983 near Chapel Hills Mall. Bauder purchased it in 1996 and relocated it to its present location in early 2000.
“I’m just sick about the closing,” said Judy Noyes, a Colorado Springs city council member and co-owner with Dick Noyes of downtown’s Chinook Bookstore. “We’re all very sad.”
