Why have zoning if changes can be made by a small group?

Dear Lon Matejczyk,

Regarding the proposed Baptist Road Wal-Mart, I don’t understand the purpose of zoning if a small group of individuals can make a monumental change to an existing zoning plan that was presumably created with the benefit of the community in mind, without the approval of the general electorate.

On a related topic, Jack Gloriad replied to a question on the proposed Baptist Road Wal-Mart that he didn’t know all of the facts regarding the issue. It is appalling that someone running for county commissioner would claim not to be knowledgeable of this issue. Being a real estate developer it is more likely that he is unwilling to take a stand on this unpopular plan for fear of alienating Republican voters who would oppose such a misuse of government power.
