Junior League hosting membership information nights

The Junior League of Colorado Springs is hosting membership information nights from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 23, and Sept. 7 and 21 at 2914 Beacon St., off Filmore.

Membership is open to women of all races, religions and national origins who demonstrate an interest in volunteerism.

The Junior League has been working in Colorado Springs for 80 years. The group develops new organizations and holds events that address community needs, including Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, CASA, CourtCare, Safe Kids, Ronald McDonald House, Children’s Literacy Center and CareFair.

Federally Employed Women hosting conference

The Columbine Chapter of Federally Employed Women is hosting a conference, Set Your Sights on Success, in recognition of Women’s Equality Day on Aug. 26 at the Academy Hotel, 8110 N. Academy Blvd.

Carrolle Rushford, will be the keynote speaker. The cost is $89 for FEW members and for nonmembers who register two or more people from the same office. The price for single nonmembers is $99.

Manitou galleries preparing for Second Saturday Art Walk

The galleries along Ruxton Avenue in Manitou Springs are hosting the Second Saturday Art Walk on Aug. 13.

Filthy Wilma’s Gallery at 10 Ruxton Ave. will feature potter and paintings by Ken and Tina Riesterer.

Galeria de la Luz at 14 Ruxton Ave. will celebrate its grand opening with a show featuring works by Maria Pacca, Laurel Swab, Jeremiah White, Ed Pointer and Jan Mummery.

Phototroph Gallery at 15 Ruxton Ave. will open a show by Larry Hulst featuring black-and-white photographs of 20th century rock concerts.

SBA, women business owners group hosting forum

The Denver Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners and the Colorado District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration are hosting the In Good Company Strategic Business Forum from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Four Points Sheraton Denver Southeast, 6363 E. Hampden Ave.

The focus of the program is to give small business owners insight into the changing Colorado and U.S. economies and show how the Colorado economy is likely to impact businesses, customers and suppliers in 2006.

The cost is $35 for association members and $40 for nonmembers.

Catamount Institute hosting sustainable community training

The Catamount Institute, Leadership Centre and TAVA Full Circle are presenting Legacy Leadership for a Sustainable Community Sept. 13-16 at the Catamount Institute near Woodland Park.

The program will take business, political and community leaders through a process that enhances their ability to think and act from a collective sense of leadership for the sustainability of their communities.

Pikes Peak Arts Council presenting awards

The Pikes Peak Arts Council is hosting the Peak Area Performances and Artists Awards at 6 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, 30 W. Dale St.

The awards were conceived in 2001 as a way to honor the arts in the Pikes Peak Region and heighten awareness of the thriving local art scene among the general public.

Awards will be presented for classical music, visual art show and artist, theatre, popular music, poetry and choreography.

The cost is $20. Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Center Box Office or by calling 634-5583.

Penrose Library hosting free legal classes

The Pikes Peak Library District is offering a free class for attorneys from noon to 1 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Penrose Library.

The class teaches attorneys how to use Westlaw, an electronic legal database available at the library.

Participants can receive Continuing Legal Education credit for attending the class, which is being offered as part of the El Paso County Bar Law Library, the only public law library in southern Colorado.

Classes for the public also are available. The Basic Legal Research class, which helps people learn to use the law library to find federal and state laws, research court cases and locate legal forms, is scheduled for 8:30 to 10 a.m. Aug. 17.

The legal collection is available during regular business hours.
