CDOT holding open houses to discuss Powers Blvd.

The Colorado Department of Transportation will hold two public open houses to present the ways in which possible changes to Powers Boulevard could affect drivers and travel plans, and how the State Highway 16 project schedule will be expedited to address emerging traffic needs.

The meetings are scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at Mesa Ridge High School, 6070 Mesa Ridge Parkway and Sept. 29 at Friendship Assembly of God, 3685 Bloomington.

The same information will be offered at both open houses.

Catamount Institute hosting photo workshop, safari

The Catamount Institute is hosting the “Autumn Nature Photography Workshop and Photo Safari” from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 30 and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 1.

Professional photographer and teacher Kevin Snyder will teach attendees how to take nature images, including the basics of digital and film photography, photographic composition, lighting and exposure.

Library district offering business programs

The Pikes Peak Library District is offering the following programs for business:

Career Skills Series. Job seekers will be able to update their resumes, and receive job hunting and interviewing advice. The classes, which will be held at the Ruth Holley Branch, are free but space is limited and registration is required.

Resume writing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 4; Finding that Job will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 11; and Successful Interviewing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 18.

Minding Your Business. Learn about business resources available at the library by attending a free tour at the Penrose Library, 20 N. Cascade at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 11 or Oct. 29. Registration is not necessary. For more information, call 531-6333, ext. 2308.

Investment Tools at Your Library. Learn how to research company information and how to follow company or mutual fund performance. Basic Legal Research Class. Participants will lean to conduct legal research using library resources. The instructor will teach students how to find federal and state laws, court cases and legal forms. Personal legal questions will not be addressed. Components of a Successful Web Site, two sessions, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct 3 and 5. Learn how to choose a domain name, a Web developer or designer and a Web hosting company. Understand how to plan your site so that it reflects the goals, look and features that are important to you. A certified Web master will teach you how to create your copy so that search engines locate your site. You will gain skills that enable you to maintain your site. The cost of the class is $24, and $5 for the instructor for materials.

Entrepreneurship at Home, four sessions 6:30 to 9 p.m., October 13, 20 and Nov. 3, 10. Starting and running a business from your home office can be done. You will learn how to take your vision and adapt it to the basic requirements of a home business setting. Bookkeeping, record keeping, equipment needed, marketing and preparing the outline for a business plan will be covered. The cost is $45, and $5 for the instructor for materials.

Press association hosting C&D forum

The Colorado Springs Press Association is hosting a forum about Referenda C and D from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Sept. 238 at the Penrose House’s Garden Pavilion, 1661 Mesa Ave.

Headlining the presentation will be Gov. Bill Owens and Mayor Lionel Rivera. Other panelists have been invited, but have not confirmed their participation.

The event will include discussion about the effects of Referenda C&D as they appear on the November ballot. Each panelist will be provided the opportunity to give an opening statement and to respond to questions from the media and the audience.

The forum, which is free to attend, is being sponsored by the press association and the El Pomar Forum for Civic Advancement.

Importing – Essential Steps to Success, six sessions, 6:30 to 8 p.m. October 4, 11, 18, 25 and Nov. 1, 8. Analyze aspects of the international trade business in this beginning level course. Topics include transportation, carriers, shipping terms, commodity classifications, working with other government agencies, fees, record retention and more. The cost is $53.

Managing Rental Property, one session, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 11, Nov. 8 and Dec. 13. Avoid headaches, hassles and lawsuits by learning how to manage your rental property professionally. Learn about advertising, tenant screening, discrimination, showing vacancies and essential lease clauses. Receive information about crime prevention, security issues, deposits, handling evictions, premises liability, record keeping and more. This course can be used for real estate continuing education credit if the registrar is told in advance that you need a certificate. The cost is $36, and $10 for material.

Junior League hosting fifth annual Fall Fling

The Junior League of Colorado Springs is having its fifth annual Fall Fling from 7 to 11 p.m. Oct. 15 at The Warehouse Restaurant.

“Get Down, Downtown” will be an evening of cocktails, food, and live and silent auctions. Proceeds will benefit the Junior League’s signature project, CARE Fair, as well as other community projects for children and families.

Regular tickets are $50. Patron tickets are $100. Add-on wine tasting tickets are $20 each, and include a wine and beer tasting with dinner.

DOR offering sales tax, wage withholding classes

The Colorado Department of Revenue is offering a free training seminar about state sales tax issues from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 7 and Oct. 21 at 1881 Pierce St., Room 110, Lakewood.

The seminar will include information a general review of all forms related to sales tax collection and remittance. Participants will learn about:

  • Sales tax licenses
  • How to collect sales tax
  • Distinguishing sales and use tax
  • Available electronic services

A seminar about wage withholding is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 14 at the same location.

  • Unemployment insurance issues

The Colorado Department of Revenue is offering a free update seminar for certified public accountants, enrolled agents and tax practitioners from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 18 and 25, and Nov. 1, 22, 29 and 30 at 1881 Pierce St., Room 110, Lakewood; Oct. 17 and Nov. 21 at 4420 Austin Bluffs Parkway, Colorado Springs; and Nov. 14 at 310 E. Abriendo Ave., Pueblo.

The seminar provides income tax information about new state tax laws, what to expect on the 2005 income tax forms, policies and processes. The information is tailored specifically to the needs of accountants and tax practitioners and continuing professional education credits are available.

Topics will include legislative updates, delinquency management, document processing and available electronic services

Tri-Lakes Women’s Club hosting wine tasting

The Tri-Lakes Women’s Club is hosting Wine and Roses IV, “An Event to Attend,” from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Pinecrest Event Center in Palmer Lake.

EDC, chamber hosting Employers’ Summit

The Grater Colorado Springs Economic Development Corp. and The Greater Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce are partnering with the Alliance for Kids, Child Care Connections and the Colorado Children’s Campaign to host “Making the Work Place Work for Families and Employers – El Paso County’s Employers’ Summit” from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Antlers Hilton Hotel, 4 S. Cascade Ave.

Participants will learn about innovative employee recruitment and retention strategies and hear success stories from business leaders about how to incorporate family friendly policies and practices into business plans. Employers will be provided information about the local child care industry and how it impacts the economy.

Speakers include Jim Hayes, president emeritus of Junior Achievement Worldwide and publisher emeritus of Fortune Magazine; Rob Grunewald of the Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis; Barbara O’Brien, president of the Colorado Children’s Campaign; and Miles K. Light, a member of the research faculty at the University of Colorado’s Leeds School of Business.
