SCORE, Service Corps of Retired Executives, has announced the schedule for its free workshop, “Should You Start Your Own Business,” for the first half of 2006. All workshops are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and registration is not necessary.
The workshop will include information about how to access and evaluate your business ideas, how to assess your risks and management skills while setting realistic expectations, funding realities for a start up, marketing considerations – such as demand, customers and competition, the business plan – describing your business, the marketing plan, the financial plan and why you need one, and how SCORE counselors can help with the process.

The Colorado Springs SCORE chapter is offering “Starting a Small Business” workshops for members of the military.
The four-hour course is designed to answer the basic questions for people leaving the service and starting a small business.
The presentation includes discussions about the advantages and disadvantages of starting from scratch, purchasing a franchise or buying an existing business. While the information is an important first step, it does not replace the need to seek legal and accounting advice for concerns unique to an individual business.
Registration is done through the Family Support Center at each base or post. The cost is $15 per participant. Additional information is available by calling the SCORE office at 636-3074.

Fort Carson – May 9, Aug. 8 and Nov. 14

The Colorado Department of Revenue and the Internal Revenue Service are offering a free training seminar about wage withholding from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 10 at 1881 Pierce St., Room 110 in Lakewood.
Information will be available about IRS and state withholding regulations. The Department of Labor and Employment will discuss labor requirements and unemployment insurance issues, and an independent insurance agent will discuss workers’ compensation.
Training materials are provided and continued professional education credits are available. Space is limited and reservations are required.

The Pikes Peak Workforce Center, the U.S. Department of Labor, Veterans Employment and Training, and the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment are hosting the Career Fair of the Rockies from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 14 at the Sheraton, 2886 S. Circle Drive.
The job fair is designed to meet the needs of veterans, including veteran job seekers and transitioning service members.

The Colorado Department of Revenue is hosting a free tax seminar for owners and managers in the restaurant, hotel catering and special event industries from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 20 and 21 at 1881 Pierce St., Room 110, in Denver.
The course will include information about state sales/use tax statutes and regulations, industry specific tax exemptions, tax filing requirements, tax exempt organizations and tax issues or problems unique to the hospitality industry.

The Employment Readiness Program, Army Community Service of Fort Carson, is hosting a job fair from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 24 at the Post Field House Building 1829, on the corner of Prussman Boulevard and Specker Avenue.
The job fair is free to recruiting employers and attendees. Anyone who is able to gain access to the post can attend.
