Green gas plant plans on hold

Xcel Energy Inc. will delay the construction of a Colorado state-of-the-art power plant that uses environmentally-friendly coal converted to gas technology to generate power.

Xcel is the state’s largest utility provider, delivering electricity and natural gas to more than two-thirds of Colorado’s residents.

Construction of a new “integrated gasification combined cycle,” power plant was anticipated to cost more than $1 billion, making it cost-prohibitive for now.

The IGCC project is still in the company’s plans, but wouldn’t be on line before 2016.
