President Bush proposed yesterday that the Food and Drug Administration be empowered to order mandatory recalls of food products suspected to be unsafe.
Bush made the announcement yesterday after an oversight panel recommended the FDA be given recall authority.
Currently, the FDA lacks the authority to order recalls, but works with producers on voluntary recalls.
Bush also proposed increasing the presence of U.S. inspectors from Customs, the Border Patrol, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and other agencies in countries that are major exporters to the United States.
Also, according to the panel’s recommendation, A certification program will likely be created to give companies that have proven track record of safety a stamp of approval.
