The leadership shakeup follows the resignation of former Senate President Joan Fitzgerald, who resigned two days ago to devote herself full-time to her campaign for the 2nd Congressional district.

Peter Groff of Denver was selected as Senate President, the first black to hold the post. Abel Tapia of Pueblo was selected as president pro tem and resigned his seat on the Joint Budget Committee, to which Morse was appointed.
