The Colorado Patient Safety Coalition honored Parkview Medical Center for its patient safety record during the 2007 Patient Safety Conference.
Parkview was chosen for the award based on the hospital-wide reduction in medication errors using wireless, hand-held devices that allow nurses to capture and document vital sign information.
Called the CARE system, the device guides nurses through the process, receiving prompts and warnings as configured by the hospitals’ nursing and pharmacy staff.
Parkview’s number of “near-miss events” – when a staff member accidentally administered the wrong doses of medicine or the wrong kinds of medicine – decreased nearly 50 percent since using the technology.
The Colorado Patient Safety Coalition is made up of professionals, institutions, regulators and consumers who take part in a dialogue regarding patient safety.
