It appears that Americans are not the only ones who consider their pets to be an extension of their families.
Reuters India is reporting that a Japanese business has begun giving employees who own dogs or cats a monthly “family allowance” for their pets.
The Kyoritsu Seiyaku Corp., which makes pet medicines, says Japan now has more pet cats and dogs than children under age 15.
So, the company offers employees who own dogs and cats a family allowance of 1,000 yen (about $9) per month.
Company officials said in the future they also might allow employees to take paid leave to grieve when pets pass away.
