County Needs Volunteers

The El Paso County Board of Commissioners is seeking volunteers to serve on several of its boards. Applications are due by June 13.
Associate members who serve for one-year terms are needed for the Board of Adjustment, which hears and decides issues of physical variances related to the zoning code.
The Citizen Review Panel needs a representative to serve for a three-year term. The panel provides a forum for the discussion of consumer concerns regarding the Department of Human Services, reviews and audits quality issues and concerns with the department, and considers and addresses other issues brought before it by the department.

Coleman Ranches receives conservation award

Coleman Ranches Inc. is the winner of the 2008 Leopold Conservation Award in Colorado.
The fifth-generation ranch consists of more than 1,500 acres of irrigated meadows and mixed short- and tall-grass prairie in Saguache.

Ombudsman model

The U.S. Small Business Administration is offering a template for resolving regulatory enforcement issues involving small businesses to state and local governments.
The National Ombudsman’s primary mission is to help small businesses when they experience excessive or unfair federal enforcement actions, such as repetitive or investigations, excessive fines, penalties, threats, retaliation or other unfair enforcement action by a federal agency.

Best in educational programming

The Southern Colorado Chapter of the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International has received the Best of the Best in Educational Programming award for 2007.
The chapter has become an industry leader in identifying and communicating trends in the hospitality industry while operating as a leading voice for both hospitality and sales, and marketing management disciplines.

Downtown excellence nominations

The Colorado Community Revitalization Association is accepting nominations for the 2008 Governor’s Awards for Downtown Excellence.
Categories include best building improvement project, best new construction, best public space project, best marketing program, best promotional event, best downtown management program and downtowner of the year.
Projects must have been completed between Sept. 1, 2006, and June 20, 2008.
The deadline for nominations is July 11.

State Forest Service offers free marketing assistance for local wood producers

The Colorado State Forest Service is looking to assist businesses creating wood products from our state’s forests through its free marketing assistance program, Colorado Forest Products.
“The only requirement for joining CFP is filling out a license agreement stipulating that the brand will not be used on any product containing less than 50 percent Colorado wood.”

Engineering council selects leaders

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Colorado has selected its board officers for 2008-09.
Lauren E. Evans of Pinyon Environmental Engineering Resources Inc. will serve as president.
Robert G. Refvem of Felsburg Holt & Ullevig is vice president and William Hoffman of CTL/Thompson will serve as secretary/treasurer.

Patriot Express Loans

During the 10 months since its launch, the Small Business Administration’s Patriot Express loan program has produced 1,304 guaranteed loans amounting to more than $135 million, with an average loan amount of nearly $104,000.
The program is available to veterans, service-disabled veterans, service members leaving active duty, members of the Reserves and National Guard, spouses and widowed spouses of a service member who died during service or of a service-connected disability.
