Colorado Springs will be one of the major stops for Spikefest, a volleyball tournament that is one of the largest amateur sport events in the nation.
Spikefest, a three-on-three and five-on-five grass volleyball series which also has stops in Dallas, Jacksonville, Houston, Austin and Boulder. The tournament will come to the Springs through 2011.
More than 2,000 players attend the annual tournament, and more than 8,000 fans show up for each game. It draws the top amateur talent both regionally and nationally. The tournament will take place at Memorial Park Aug. 15-16.
The tournament is only one of several sporting events slated for this summer, said Tom Osborne, Sports Corp. president and CEO.
“The summer of 2009 will be huge for the city, with Spikefest, the 2009 State Games of America, the 87th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, Sky Sox baseball and more,” he said. “Landing this popular event contributes another sports option … and enhances our reputation as a top sports event destination.”
