Academy Blvd, from Galley to Carefree is most of the problem. This is the area that needs to be reinvented. The rest, I believe, will return when the economy turns around and can sustain itself for the time being. There is nothing like restaurants and decent bars to bring business back, just look at downtown. Infrastructure is also needed desperately in this area. The roads are in disrepair, there is no landscaping or style to speak of and the whole area needs a major face-lift. Some of this stretch is also fed by low income housing so you have to have both businesses that cater to them, and also draw new consumer business from other areas of the Springs. For instance, big name restaurants like Ruth's Chris, Delfriscos, etc... and possibly a higher end hotel, would be a type of restaurants and business to bring more money into the stretch. Powers Blvd has taken off and is so much nicer than Academy is, but it also has higher income areas lining it and it shows. This is going to be the main issue with enticing new business from Powers to the "dreary alley" of Academy.

Of course the biggest problem we seem to have is getting and keeping manufacturing jobs in the Springs. Just take a look at Intel, Atmel or Agilent's parking lot any day of the week, or the list of companies that have left or reduced work forces: SCI, LSI, Cray, Rockshox, Inmos, Plasmon, DDI, Ampex, the list is endless with no leadership from local or national government to speak of. Instead of bringing in more manufacturing companies that bring more jobs and in turn, create more consumer spending and in turn, creates more tax revenue for our city, we seem to continually lose them to overseas markets or other states.

Bad decisions made by our city government in regards to OTC and other real estate deals are also not very healthy or responsible and cost the taxpayers millions of dollars that could and should be spent on productive, revenue-generating projects.
So good luck with bringing back Black Angus, Cowboy's, Albertson's, Federal Food Service, Office Furniture Express, etc... they have all gone East, West, North, or Bust.
