Americans are apparently using a household move as an opportunity to downsize their belongings.
The average weight of a household move has decreased during the last four years, according to Mayflower Transit.
The company said shipping weights has decreased 10 percent since it began tracking weights in 1994.
Last year the average weigh was 6,751 pounds, a 2 percent decrease compared to 2007.
Jennifer Bonham, a spokeswoman for the company, believes the average moving weights are a indicator of societal change
“We’re watching Americans shift their lifestyles to accommodate the current economic environment, emerging sustainability trends and the green movement,” she said.
“The trend parallels other industries, such as the auto industry,” she said. “The recent movement is toward less consumption, greener solutions and simpler lifestyles.
