Robert and Judy Mollo were this year’s honorees at the Promise Ball fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation on May 9 at The Broadmoor Hotel.

The Mollos are friends of Dr. Mike Barber, who founded the local JDRF chapter after his daughter Margo was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes during 1999.

Barber told the black-tie guests that the Mollos were among the first to support their “god-granddaughter” after her diagnosis. Since then, they have passionately supported JDRF’s quest to find a cure, not only for Margo, but for all the children and adults who live with Type 1 diabetes.

Continuing to give back, the Mollos donated a “cocktails at sunset” party for 50 at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, part of the live auction which included the annual JDRF hangar party donated by Bob and Leslie Penkhus, a 13-week old female Yorkshire terrier, and a dinner for 16 prepared by Chef Jamie West, executive chef at the Ojai Valley Resort and Spa, at the home of Gayle Beshears.

The award was presented by Barber and board President Andi Chernushin. Past honorees have included Leigh MacHaffie, Ray and Linda Renneberger, Barber, Tim and Mary Cobb, Bob and Leslie Penkhus and the children of Colorado Springs JDRF.

Amy Hunter and Melissa Svenby co-chaired the gala evening which included a “super silent auction,” live auction, dinner, and dancing to Tiny Barge and the Big Chill.
