New HR University offers to show ropes to small businesses

A handful of local business and economic organizations have teamed to create Human Resources University, which will feature a series of 10 training classes for small businesses.

Jerry Fritz, dean of the Economic and Workforce Development Division of Pikes Peak Community College, coordinated the concept after hearing from local businesses what their biggest challenges were.

Fritz said the classes are designed to keep small businesses abreast of rapidly changing human resource policies and best practices.

Topics will cover the full span of the employment lifecycle, focusing on the employment relationship from before hire workforce planning to the end of the lifecycle dealing with terminations and layoffs and the myriad of issues that occur in between. Classes include:

  • Employment Classification – 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 10
  • Legal and Effective Hiring – 4:30-7:30 p.m. Session I, Oct. 8; Session II, Oct. 22,
  • Employment Law Overview – 4 to 9 p.m. Nov. 5
  • Economic Stimulus Bill – 5 to 7 p.m. Nov.12
  • Policy Management – 5 to 7 p.m. Dec.10
  • Employee Relations & Performance Management – 4:30  to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 14
  • Workplace Investigations – 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 28
  • Business Continuity – 4:30-7:30 p.m. Feb. 11
  • Building Your Bench Strength/Succession Planning & Career Progression – 4:30-7:30 p.m. Feb, 25
  • Navigating the End of the Employment Lifecycle – 4:30-7:30 p.m. March 11

All sessions will be held at the Pikes Peak Community College Downtown Campus, 100 W. Pikes Peak Ave., Room S204.
