The City of Colorado Springs is offering federal grant money to residents who make home energy efficiency upgrades, such as replacing windows or adding attic insulation.

Awards vary, and the money is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

To be eligible for the program, property owners must occupy the property, live within the City limits and meet unspecified income guidelines. The completed value of the home cannot be more than $240,000, and the city must inspect the home prior to the upgrades.

Even if repairs are needed before grant dollars can be applied, homeowners might be eligible for low-interest loans to pay for the repairs. Loan closing costs can be waived and interest rates range between zero and 3 percent.
