TriWest will once again provide the managed care support to the Department of Defense program for the state of Colorado.

The Department of Defense announced the contract - estimated at a worth of more than $16.9 billion - earlier this week.

The contract will assist the military health system in 21 other western and mid-western states.

However, the DoD awarded grants to Aetna and United Healthcare in other parts of the country, removing Humana and Health Net as primary military managed care program providers.

The Aetna award for the northern region of the country is a $16.6 billion contract, while the United Healthcare award is a $21.8 billion contract.

The military relies on private insurers to provide support to the military’s direct medical care system to eligible beneficiaries in each region.
