The paper had covered several generations of my family in this town, both arrivals and departures, so it is with some sadness to see the paper go the way of so many recently. As a boy I delivered it for extra money when the regular carrier when on vacation or got sick. It was a plum job.

With its financial difficulty it is somewhat ironic that the best explanation for the paper's demise comes from filmmaker Michael Moore, who recently attributed the fall of newspapers to corporate capitalism.

As a journalist and editor I saw the arrival of the corporate chains when the managers dumped investigative reporting in favor of writing dummed down stories to increase readership and profits. To heck with the public's right to know. The writing was literally on the wall.

As a result, we get our news today in the form of unfiltered banalities and rancor from the idiot box 24\7. In this polarized environment, even the G-T looks moderate and newsworthy. Adios, you will be missed.
