If memory serves me, 1989 was when a comedian from the comedy club gave Mayor Isaac a huge scare. It took a republican smear to change the course of that election. I think that was the year that no less than 22 people decided they could do a better job as mayor than Isaac. I remember a near chaotic election, and I also think that was the year that one Doug Bruce offered up a revised version of TABOR. Which passed in a landslide. You know, city council's favorite piece of voter sponsored legislation.

Now we have two women feeling sorry for the city and all their fantastic methods of "helping" the city economy. In a city with 150 non profit organizations, it is charming to watch Lionel and friends pony up $37 million or $53 million (depends on who's talking) for another non profit organization, the USOC. Since this country believes in equal treatment, I assume we can expect a wave of tax proposals to bail out Focus on the Family (they actually hire people around here) or the Navigators, or any of the rest of our favorite 150 tax exempt organizations.

I think the city taxpayers are tired of getting drilled for every crazy idea that City Council comes up with. I think the Stormwater Tax will get swamped. I think Doug Bruce will get his tax controls strengthened. And I expect city council to yelp about it. Thousands of Colorado Springs people have been laid off. Thousands of homes have been or are in foreclosure. To raise taxes now is just vicious "me first" politics.
