Colorado Springs came in 18th on a list of American cities considered to be the most secure places to live, ranking just behind Seattle (17th) but ahead of Denver (19th).

The Farmers Insurance Group of Companies released its report this week, ranking large-, mid-size and small communities based on “crime statistics, extreme weather, risk of natural disasters, housing depreciation, foreclosures, terrorist threats, environmental hazards, air quality, life expectancy and job-loss numbers in 379 municipalities.

The study considered statistics from 114 metropolitan areas with populations of 500,000 or more. The top five safest large metropolitan areas were Austin-Round Rock, Texas; Des Moines-West Des Moines, Iowa; Madison, Wis.; Bethesda-Gaithersburg-Frederick, Md.; and Rochester, N.Y.

In the mid-size city category, Fort Collins and Boulder ranked 17th and 18th, , and Grand Junction was 16th among small towns.
