A ranch near Fountain is the leading candidate for a new veterans cemetery in southern Colorado.

In a statement today, Rep. Doug Lamborn says the Department of Veterans’ Affairs considers Kane Ranch the “leading potential site” out of several southern Colorado sites considered. The VA has initiated an environmental assessment and construction could begin in two years.

The site emerged as a leading candidate after county officials agreed to donate the land for a veterans’ cemetery.

VA officials previously visited the site in November 2008.

  1. Didn’t the Kane Ranch have enviornmental problems so bad that the County was unable to convert it to a Park?

  2. There is justice in the fact that the county that has been home to so many genuine heroes should also be their final resting place. Should we honor them by preserving Kane Ranch and the beauty of the surrounding prairie?

  3. RJF, I’m guessing the residents of a cemetery probably wont be in much danger, even if the ground water has something undesirable in it, or the soils a bit acidic.
