I think I can explain Coffman's interest in this issue. His district is the home of Raytheon, TRW, Boeing and Lockheed Martin. Pinon Canyon expansion isn't about a military necessity for troop training. The Army has plenty of ranges for that. It's about creating a convenient testing area for new generations of high-tech weapons for corporations in Coffman's district.

This topic makes for a great discussion but let's ask the real question... Where is our Congressman, Doug Lamborn??? He sits on the House Committee on Natural Resources and the House Armed Services Committee, two committes that would have a vested interest on each side of the issue. This site is also geographically closer to Lamborn's district than that of Representitive Coffman. The Pinion Canyon site also has a direct impact on our backyard geography and military presence in Congressional District 5, Lamborn needs to step up his game and focus on the issues that impact his district or the citizens of Congressional District 5 may need to start shopping for a new Republican candidate for 2012!

Jocko your posting is very disturbing...come on down here and drive off the beaten path...there aren't any dried up ranches out here that I can see....nothing but green grass sprouting and wild flowers blooming....cows mooing and wild life in abundance.

Agree with the fact that CS should not have used ED to acquire land on North Academy...no one who owns land/property should be subject to that.

The Army has not made its case that it actually "needs" the land and this is according to the Government Accounting Office (GAO) who issued a report in January '09 stating that the Army had not justified its need.

Mike Coffman is the ONLY Congressional Representative (even though he is not from Southern Colorado) who gives a damn about the Army's need for adequate training room related to Fort Carson. Maybe its because he was an active duty Army officer in Desert Storm in 1990, when he took an unpaid leave of absense from his seat in the Colorado Legislatue to go to war there, and is a Reserve Marine officer now.

The Business Journal should follow up and REALLY interview him, and why he introducing the law now, and what he thinks can and should be done to get the Army what it needs.

Bull. If the Army needs it for training then this is a far better excuse for eminent domain than Colorado Springs claiming domain over the homes on N Academy so they could be sold to developers to increase the city's tax revenue. I am far more concerned about having the best-trained military in this world of Moslem terroists than a few dried out ranches. What the city did was criminal and unConstitutional even the revisionist Supreme Court Justices ok'd it.
