State employees who choose to purchase their own health insurance using state money have a new option: United Healthcare.
The state chose United for its self-funded insurance program, but other insurance companies are still being used for other state employees. About 32,000 people opt for the self-funded insurance programs.
The five-year contract is effective July 1.
At least one insurance company isn’t happy about the change. Cigna was left out of all the state insurance options when Colorado chose its insurers. The company is appealing, said spokeswoman Kathryn Stabrawa.
“We question how the process to choose a health carrier for state employees was made, and the award itself appears flawed, because among other things, the state failed to property follow its own policies and procedures during the selection process,” she said.
