Colorado politicians all claiming outsider status

Colorado’s campaign season has politicians from both parties trying to show themselves as outcasts and rebels.

No one wants to be a party favorite as primary voters in other states have been rejecting incumbents and party insiders.

As Colorado’s Democratic and Republican parties gather this weekend to narrow primary fields for races this year, candidates from both sides are sounding similar campaign themes. They’re promising change and depicting themselves as outsider reformers with a populist bent.

Democrats are choosing between Sen. Michael Bennet and former state lawmaker Andrew Romanoff.

Republicans include Weld County prosecutor Ken Buck. Former Republican Lt. Gov. Jane Norton will petition onto ballots.
