The only reason the hill climb gets anywhere near 5,000 people to the dumbest race in the world is the City Council. They buy several thousand tickets every year (spending our money.) Council gives the tickets away in the Police and Fire Departments. It is the single largest pollution event on the mountain each year. But it’s an important event, at least to families in Albuquerque.

RJF – don’t blame Mike for that statistic. You’re right. Actual bodies on Pikes Peak are closer to 5,000, but overall race viewers were estimated at 200,000 in 2007 and 2008 – based on a variety of media and Web broadcast statistics. Thanks for the chance to clarify.

“200,000 Fans turn out to watch the race … ” NO WAY! If they get 20,000 they’d be lucky! Someone please proof the article or at least hold the hyperbole to a minimum. Mike Moran never met an overinflated statistic he didn’t like!!

…………. it’s weird seeing an image of the Hill Climb, with tire rubber & painted center lines on asphalt. It’s a whole different race these days.
