Work on widening Marsheffel Road from Colorado Tech Drive to North Carefree Circle will begin this summer.
R.E. Monks Construction has been awarded an $8.1 million contract for the construction.
Three other firms have also worked on the project.
Wilson and Co. handled design for improvements between Constitution Avenue and North Carefree Circle. Matrix Design was the design firm for the improvements between Colorado Tech Drive and Constitution and Jacobs Engineering will be Construction Management for the project.
Once completed, Marksheffel Road will be able to handle increased increase traffic.
The existing two-lane road will be expanded to a four-lane median divided arterial. That work is in addition to a section of the road that has already been completed south of Colorado Tech Drive to North Carefree Circle.
Right of way property acquisition and utility easements have been underway for about a year and several utility companies will be moving lines as part of the project.
The road widening is funded through the voter-approved Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority one-percent sales tax.
Work is expected to take about one year to complete and road will remain open during the construction period.
