Penrose-St. Francis Health Services has one of the top-ranked emergency rooms in the state.
Health Grades Inc., based in Golden, rated hospitals on their risk-adjusted mortality rates for patients admitted through emergency departments.
The independent group evaluated Medicare records on more than 5 million patients at nearly 5,000 hospitals from 2006 to 2008, and the 5 percent with the best adjusted mortality rates were given the award.
Penrose is joined by McKee Medical Center in Loveland, the Medical Center of Aurora, North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley and the Rose Medical Center in Denver.
Penrose does not pay Health Grades for the ranking. However, the hospital must pay the organization for rights to use the award as part of its marketing efforts.
