Grocery store liquor sales initiative won’t be on ballot

A proposed initiative to allow grocery store liquor sales will not appear on the November ballot.

The Denver attorney who wrote the measure said he will no longer attempt to gather the signatures necessary to place it on the ballot, the Denver Business Journal is reporting.

The state legislature took up two bills that would have permitted similar sales in grocery and convenience stores this year, and each bill died without leaving committee in 2008 and 2009.

The attorney says he is planning a ballot measure for 2012, when Barack Obama is likely to be on the ballot and a large liberal voter turnout.
