New nonstop flights from Springs an ‘economic opportunity’

Allegiant Air at the Colorado Springs Airport will add two nonstop flights to Phoenix-Mesa, Ariz.  and Long Beach, Calif. starting Sept. 15.

The jet service is scheduled to operate twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Since 2002, Allegiant, known for its low-cost fares, has offered nonstop service from Colorado Springs to Las Vegas.

After the announcement was made this morning, Vice Mayor Larry Small said the new service will bring economic opportunity as it will allow business people in the community to connect with business people in other states.

“This is a huge step for the airport,” Small said.

Airport Aviation Director Mark Earle thanked Allegiant Air for bringing new flights to the airport, adding that Allegiant is a “unique” company because it is an airline and also a full-service travel company, as Allegiant Travel Company.

Small joked about booking one of the flights, which have a low introductory fare.

“I’m looking forward to taking one of those trips. At $29.99, even a council member can afford it.”

Flights to Long Beach Airport depart at 9:25 a.m. and arrive at 10:40 a.m. Return flights depart at 1:20 a.m. and arrive in Colorado Springs at 2:30 p.m.

Flights to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport depart at 3:10 p.m. and arrive at 3:55 p.m. Return flights depart at 6 a.m. and arrive at 8:45 a.m.

Allegiant’s flights will be on a 150-seat MD-80 jet.
