BLM wraps up public meetings on Christo proposal

The Bureau of Land Management is holding its last public meeting this week on an art proposal that Christo and his late wife, Jeanne-Claude, envisioned for the Arkansas River.

The couple proposed temporarily hanging large fabric panels in eight spots along a 42-mile stretch of the river. The earliest it could happen is 2013.

The BLM is seeking public comment on a draft environmental impact statement on the project, called “Over the River,” and it held meetings in Canon City, Salida and Cotopaxi this week for the public to speak. The last meeting was scheduled Thursday in Denver.

Critics have said the proposal could ruin tourism, fishing, wildlife habitat and traffic between Salida and Canon City.
