Google launching TV service

Google will launch its television service in the United States this fall and worldwide next year as it broadens its reach from  computers to TVs.

The service, which will allow for full Internet browsing via television sets, will be free, and Google will work with a variety of program makers and electronics manufacturers to bring it to consumers. Samsung and Sony are two potential partners.

The announcement comes less than a week after rival Apple Inc unveiled its latest Apple TV product and will intensify the battle for drawing in consumers and potentially for the $180 billion global TV advertising market.

Google plans to make Chrome, which competes with Internet Explorer and Firefox, the center of an operating system that would offer an alternative to Microsoft Windows.
