The U.S. Women’s Open won’t be the only prestigious athletic event hosted by the city in 2011.

The U.S. Olympic Committee, the Department of Defense and the United Service Organizations announced that the Warrior Games will return to Colorado Springs in 2011.

The competition, which is a joint effort between the USOC and the Department of Defense, will take place May 16-21at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

This May’s inaugural Warrior Games competition drew 187 men and women.

The competition helps elevate abilities through athletic competition for wounded, ill, and injured service members by providing a focal event to empower the incorporation of athletics into military wounded warrior programs. The Warrior Games serve as an introduction to Paralympic sports for injured service members by inspiring recovery, physical fitness, and promoting new opportunities for growth and achievement.

More than 200 servicemen and women are expected to compete in seven sports next year.
