Doug Quimby has been named the new chairman of the board of directors for the Colorado Springs Regional Economic Development Corp.
Quimby, who is president of La Plata Communities, will start today.
New board members include Steve Helbing, regional president-Southern Colorado, Wells Fargo Bank; Kevin O’Neil, president of The O’Neil Group Company and Braxton Technologies; and Steve Pope, publisher, The Gazette. Jeff Greene, El Paso County administrator, will serve as an ex-officio board member.
“We continue to see the pain of a weak economy playing out,” Quimby said. “With the poverty rate in El Paso County at its highest in five years, the work of EDC in assisting companies with relocation and expansion plans takes on added urgency. Approximately 90 percent of the jobs generated by EDC-assisted companies are filled by local hires. Since the last quarter of 2009, EDC-assisted companies have been in the process of hiring more than 800 from our local community. We have to do more, but it will take sustained support from the entire region, as well as a more creative approach to job creation, to help us meet this enormous challenge.”
