Vestas Wind Systems is celebrating the official opening of its new Colorado factory.

The Danish wind turbine manufacturer opened its wind tower factory in Pueblo Tuesday. It’s nearly 13 million square feet and main production building covers the equivalent of nine football fields.

In Colorado, Vestas also has a blade factory in Windsor, an engineering center in Louisville, and a plant in Brighton that assembles nacelles. Another blade factory is set to open next year in Brighton. The plants employ about 1,400 people, including more than 400 in Pueblo.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar made the grand opening in his home state the first stop on a national renewable energy tour. Next, he’ll visit California and Nevada.
