Whether the proliferation of data in the Information Age is positive or negative is open to debate, but a Pew Research study suggests that cell phones are bringing health awareness into the 21st century.
A study conducted in coordination with the California Healthcare Foundation found that adult cell phone users have plenty of health advantages.
Of those surveyed, the study found that:
- 17 percent have used their phone to look up health or medical information, and 29 percent have done such searches.
- 9 percent have “apps” that help track or manage health
The apps count calories, give detailed nutritional information, keep personal health records and provide yoga exercises that can be performed at a work desk.
Still, the study concedes that health information might be one of the last bastions of the paper-filing era. According to the report, the bulk of health information is obtained off-line through health professionals.
