The small business year-to-date hiring index in Colorado declined 2 percent, while salary-per-check levels declined 0.3 percent, according to SurePayroll’s October 2010 Small Business Scorecard

In the western region of the United States, hiring increased 4.2 percent, and salary per check increased 1.7 percent.

Nationwide, small business hiring was flat in October, after four consecutive months of positive year-to-date growth. However, average paycheck size showed small improvement with positive growth last month.

Year-to-date, small business hiring increased 4.3 percent and pay increased 0.6 percent.

Although optimism among small-business owners remains low at 57 percent, that’s an increase of 3 percent compared to September.
