Amanda Mountain is the new general manager and station director of KTSC-TV, southern Colorado’s public television outlet. Headquartered in Pueblo, the station has long had a low profile in Colorado Springs. Mountain, 34, graduated summa cum laude from the University of Colorado with a degree in media management. She most recently was director of Gazette Charities but has been engaged with the Colorado Springs nonprofit community since 2003, when she became the marketing and community engagement director of the UCCS Visual and Performing Arts department. She has served on half a dozen community boards and raised millions of dollars for local nonprofits.
Why did you take the position?
I wasn’t necessarily on the prowl for a new job, but this was a phenomenal opportunity to broaden my skills and really bring something new to the community. A friend told me about it, and I was really excited about a challenge that will really stretch me, stretch my abilities.
Will you be re-focusing the station on Colorado Springs?
It really has been a regional station, but one without a physical presence in Colorado Springs. We’ll be opening an office here in Colorado Springs, and talking to new potential partners and underwriters, and figuring out how we can make a positive impact.
Won’t Pueblo residents be concerned about losing their station to Colorado Springs?
Pueblo is an awesome community, and I’m really looking forward to being part of it. There won’t be any change in our commitment to Pueblo, but we’ll be trying to emphasize the important role that KTSC plays (in Colorado Springs), so that, for instance, it won’t be an afterthought for annual giving. Biggest change: I’ll be down here and you’ll be seeing RMPBS around the community, engaged with community partners. We’re hoping to work with the library, with KRCC and with local colleges and universities.
Do you plan new programming for Colorado Springs audiences?
We already produce more local programming than any other Rocky Mountain PBS station, and I’m sure we’ll be expanding it even more. You’ll see far more visibility. We’re just beginning a lot of conversations, giving a lot of people the opportunity to tell us what they want to see, what they want to hear. I’m hesitant to tell you what it’s going to look like — I want to see the end results of our surveys.
