Colorado Springs artist Sarah A. Boardman has been chosen to paint the portrait of President Barack Obama for the State Capitol.

The portrait will join the other 43 presidential portraits in the Gallery of the Presidents located on the third floor of the State Capitol rotunda.

Other portraits were painted by nationally recognized portrait artist Lawrence Williams who died in 2003. The committee wanted to commission an artist who could paint in a similar style, color range and background as Williams work.

The portrait is being paid for by private funds and the lead gift was given by former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb and his wife Wilma.

The artist commission is $10,000 and it is anticipated that the portrait will be finished in late April and dedicated before the 2011 Legislative session ends in May.
