Sens. seek deadline extension on Fort Carson Aviation Brigade idea

Colorado Senators Mark Udall and Michael Bennet joined Congressman Doug Lamborn in requesting an extension of the Army’s deadline for public comments regarding placement of a Combat Aviation Brigade.

In a Dec. 13 letter to Lt. General Daniel Bolger, the legislators acknowledged the time-sensitive nature of the decision, while pushing for an extension of the Dec. 20 deadline for public comments, citing a “busy holiday season.”

The call for public comments stems from discussion of the Aviation Brigade’s Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS), which analyzes environmental effects related to expanding the brigades.

The Army has listed three options for additional brigades:  First, to maintain the current force structure by not creating additional units; second, to create one new brigade at either Fort Carson or Joint Base Lewis-McChord; third, to establish a new brigade at both Fort Carson and Lewis-McChord.

The Army is expecting to make a decision next year.
