The discount retail chain Dollar General plans to expand in Colorado and 34 other states this year.
The chain plans to open 625 stores and hire an additional 6,000 people.
The company employs about 88,000 people and has 9,273 stores. The retailer operates two stores in Colorado Springs, five in Pueblo, Colo., and three in Arvada, Colo. Additionally, it plans to relocate or remodel 550 locations.
Based in Tennessee, Dollar General Corp.’s earnings increased nearly 70 percent in the third quarter over the prior year. With revenue of $3.2 billion, its earnings were $128 million.
In 2007, Dollar General was acquired by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., a private equity firm, for $7.3 billion. In 2009, that firm took the retailer public, the Denver Business Journal reported today.
The company’s competitors are Family Dollar, Dollar Tree and Wal-Mart.
