Colo. ear acupuncture law could change

A bill to dramatically expand who could legally perform a type of acupuncture is up for debate Tuesday in the Colorado House.

House Bill 1119 addresses so-called “ear acupuncture,” which is performed to treat addictions and mental health disorders. The measure would expand those who could be licensed by the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association to give the treatment.

Psychiatrists, nurses, social workers and even marriage therapists could study to be licensed to perform the treatment under the bill. The Acupuncture Association of Colorado hasn’t yet taken a position on the measure.

The group includes about 250 acupuncturists statewide.
