Buck pushing federal balanced budget amendment

Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck, a former Republican Senate candidate, is forming a nonprofit dedicated to passing a federal balanced budget amendment.

Buck said Tuesday the foundation Balance America will focus on state-based research, education and leadership aimed at addressing the national debt. He says the organization will serve as a clearinghouse of information and identify each legislator and governor in each state based on their stance on spending and ratifying a balanced budget amendment.

Two-thirds of Congress would have to approve a constitutional amendment mandating a balanced federal budget and three-quarters of the states would have to ratify it.

Democratic Sen. Mark Udall of Colorado has said he’s joining Republicans to support an amendment.

Buck lost to Democrat Michael Bennet in Colorado’s U.S. Senate race in November.
