Colo. senator wants tax hike to avoid budget cuts

Some Colorado Democratic lawmakers are not happy about Gov. John Hickenlooper’s proposal to slash education funding to help balance the state budget. They’re also objecting to his recommendation to shore up the state’s reserve fund and asking state employees to pick up more of the state’s share of their pension contribution.

One of them, Sen. Rollie Heath of Boulder, told The Denver Post he plans to offer a proposal asking voters to raise taxes to avoid the cuts. He said he’ll unveil his proposal by the end of the month.

Hickenlooper, also a Democrat, has repeatedly said that he doesn’t think there’s any appetite for tax increases in a recession.

He wants to give schools $332 million less than they got this year, which amounts to about $500 less per student.
