Colorado Democratic Party chairwoman Pat Waak is stepping down after leading the party for six years.

Waak says the party needs new leaders and new blood. She also says it’s time for the party to find better ways to recruit young voters and convince them that political parties are still relevant.

The State Central Committee is meeting at the Colorado Convention Center on Saturday to pick new leaders, including a new chair, vice chair, secretary and treasurer.

Three candidates are competing to succeed Waak – Washington legislative aide Richard Palacio, longtime party activist Polly Baca, and northern Colorado party official Adam Bowen.
