AFA hosting student engineering competition

Civil engineering students will build steel bridges make concrete float during a two-hour competition that’s part of the 2011 American Society of Civil Engineers Rocky Mountain Student Conference at the Air Force Academy this week.

The ASCE regional conference brings 400 students, cadets and faculty members from 16 schools in the United States and Mexico in events designed to broaden their perspective of civil engineering.

The event starts Thursday and will be filled with concrete canoe design and racing, the concrete canoe swamp test, steel bridge construction, can-structure design and technical paper presentations.

The public can watch the concrete canoe competition from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 to 6 p.m. April 1 Prospect Lake in Memorial Park. All other events will take place at the Air Force Academy.
